Degree Completion
The following outlines the general requirements for the MA in Sociology in accordance with Graduate School policies and the Graduate Catalog. For detailed information on degree requirements and program policies, please refer to the UConn graduate catalog.
Coursework Requirements
Core Courses (12 credits)
- SOCI 5001 & 5002 (Proseminar)
- SOCI 5201 (The Logic of Social Research)
- SOCI 5251 (Core Theorists)
- Methods requirement of either SOCI 5203 (Quantitative) or SOCI 5231 (Qualitative).
Required Sociology Electives (6 credits)
Students must take at least two courses from the approved list of substantive topics: SOCI 5421, 5501, 5505, 5515, 5525, 5601, 5602, 5604, 5605, 5613, 5614, 5651, 5701, 5805, 5821, 5825, 5833, 5895, 6203, 6205, 6231.
Independent studies (SOCI 5899) do not generally count towards these credits.
Additional Electives (12 credits)
Graduate-level elective credits selected with the major advisor.
Capstone Portfolio
The MA in Sociology culminates in a professional capstone portfolio rather than a traditional thesis. This portfolio consists of a minimum of three individual papers (each at least 15 pages in length) that collectively demonstrate a command of sociological theory, research methods, and a chosen substantive area.
Students may build their portfolio using work that originates from formal course requirements, independent study, or non-course accomplishments such as grant proposals or conference presentations. Please note that co-authored material is not eligible for inclusion. The final portfolio is designed in consultation with, and evaluated by, the student's major advisor.
