Sociology Majors Win 2022 SHARE Awards

Congratulations to  Madeline Doyle, Samantha Gove, and Nicholas Xenophontos who were selected to receive the 2022 Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts Research Experience (SHARE) Award!

Madeline Doyle ’24 (Political Science & Sociology) will be working with faculty mentor Dr. Matthew Singer (Political Science) on "Presidential Approval in a Pandemic - Evidence From U.S. States."

Samantha Gove ’24 (Sociology & Human Rights) will be working with faculty mentor Ryan Talbert (Sociology) on “Police Killings of Native American People: Examining Variation Across Space, Time, and Status Characteristics.”

Nicholas Xenophontos ’23 (Mathematics & Sociology) will be working with faculty mentor Dr. Ruth Braunstein (Sociology) on "Monetary Fungibility and Political Context: Comparing Church Statements About Abortion and Catholic Schools."

Menachem Begin Post-Doctoral Fellowship

Adane Zawdu received a Menachem Begin Post-Doctoral Fellowship from the Israeli Ministry Of Science & Technology. He will be spending the year in the department of sociology and anthropology at Ben Gurion University.

 

 

Kristen Kirksey: Wood/Raith Gender Identity Living Trust Fellowship

Congratulations to Kristen Kirksey, recipient of the 2021 Wood/Raith Gender Indentity Summer Fellowship!

The Wood/Raith Living Trust is named for Audrey Wood (UCONN class of ‘47) and Edeltraut Raith. Both Wood and Raith earned their Masters in Library Science from the University of Southern California and spent their careers as librarians with the San Francisco Public Library system. They generously gifted the University of Connecticut funds for the study of gender identity under the Wood/Raith Living Trust.

Jessica Yorks: 2021 Honorable Mention Awardee of the Beth B. Hess Memorial Scholarship

Please join us in congratulating Jessica Yorks, the 2021 Honorable Mention Awardee of the Beth B. Hess Memorial Scholarship. The Beth B. Hess Memorial Scholarship Award was established in 2005 to support first generation college students who began their academic careers in a community college, have faced significant obstacles, are committed to teaching, and mentoring other less privileged students, and exemplify Beth’s commitment to professional service and social justice work through activism. Beth B. Hess was a President of SWS and one of the mentoring award winners; she was also the President of the Society for the Study of Social Problems (SSSP) and Secretary Treasurer of the American Sociological Association (ASA).  These organizations join SWS in supporting the Beth B. Hess Scholar each year.

Noel Cazenave Receives Faculty Excellence in Research Award

The Faculty Excellence in Research and Creativity Awards are given to individual faculty who have made significant and or creative contributions to a field of knowledge or area of inquiry. These awards recognize research excellence and the highest levels of creativity that enhance the University’s academic and creative reputation. Individuals who are nominated for this award must have a distinguished record of ongoing scholarly and/or creative productivity and must have worked at UConn for at least 10 years.

Koyel Khan: WGSS Teaching Award

Congratulations to Koyel Khan, who has been selected for the Excellence in Graduate Teaching in Women's Studies Award. This award recognizes excellence in teaching by graduate students in the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) Program. It is awarded annually to a graduate student who exemplifies feminist pedagogy in the classroom.

Dr. Arnold Dashefsky Receives Sklare Award

The Marshall Sklare Award is given annually by the Association for the Social Scientific Study of Jewry (ASSJ) to a senior scholar who has made a significant scholarly contribution to the social scientific study of Jewry, primarily through the publication of a body of research in books and articles or of published work related to public policy.

We are proud to share that Professor Emeritus Arnold Dashefsky, founder of the Center for Judaic Studies, will receive the Sklare Award this year for his career-long distinguished contributions to the field of sociology. Awardees are prolific scholars who have helped to shape the modern study of Jewish life

The Association for the Social Scientific Study of Jewry is a cross-disciplinary organization of individuals whose research concerns the Jewish people throughout the world. The ASSJ encourages and facilitates contact among researchers, supports the dissemination of research, and assists in the cultivation of younger scholars.

Allen Hyde: Georgia Tech SGA’s Dean George C. Griffin Faculty of the Year Award

Allen Hyde, UConn Sociology PhD Graduate in the Class of 2016, was awarded the Georgia Tech SGA’s Dean George C. Griffin Faculty of the Year Award at the Up with the White & Gold awards ceremony. He was nominated by several students for engaging with issues that local Atlanta communities face and for the passion and care that he takes in his teaching.
