The Sociology Minor
To minor in sociology, you need at least 15 credits of 200-level Sociology courses, including either Soci 205 (Methods of Social Research) or Soci 270 (Social Theory). In addition, you must take Soci 107 (Intro), 115 (Social Problems), or 125 (Race, Class, and Gender) before you can take Soci 205 or Soci 270.
To declare a minor in sociology, contact Kathy Covey in the department office. You must file a final plan of study in the first four weeks of the semester in which you will graduate. Turn it in to Kathy Covey, in the Sociology Department office, room 115 Manchester Hall. Use the link at left to get the minor plan of study form.
Some things to keep in mind about the sociology minor::
1. You need to obtain a grade of "C" or better in a course in order to count it towards the minor. This is different than the major requirement, which is a "C" average in Sociology courses.
2. Space is often limited in Soci 205 and Soci 270, so should try to take them early.
3. The minor will be listed on your transcript but not on your diploma.
4. In addition to the departmental requirements, the university has the following general rules:
A minor is available only to a matriculated student currently pursuing a baccalaureate degree. While not required for graduation, a minor provides an option for the student who wants an academic focus in addition to a major. Completion of a minor requires that a student earn a C (2.0) grade or better in each of the required courses for that minor. The same course may be used to meet both major and minor course requirements unless specifically stated otherwise in a major or minor. A maximum of 3 credits toward the minor may be transfer credits of courses equivalent to University of Connecticut courses. Substitutions are not possible for required courses in a minor. A plan of study for the minor; signed by the department or program head, director, or faculty designee; must be submitted to the Degree Audit Office during the first four weeks of the semester in which the student expects to graduate. The minor is then recorded on the student's final transcript. |
